[Head-to-head comparison]
Sanity vs Prismic
Sanity vs Prismic for page building, structured content, localization, governance, APIs, cost and migration.
By Kalle Bertell
Direct answer
Choose Sanity when content should be structured documents in a managed Content Lake and the team will shape Studio. Choose Prismic when editors should assemble hosted pages from slices and the repository plan covers users and locales. Sanity does not include a finished page builder. Prismic does not give you GROQ or a self-hosted content store. Preview is integration work on both.
Choose Sanity when
Documents reused beyond the page
References and GROQ suit content that appears in more than one channel.
A custom editorial application
Studio can follow the team’s inputs and navigation, and you maintain that React app.
Queries you control
GROQ can join and reshape documents instead of only fetching a page of slices.
Choose Prismic when
A hosted Page Builder
Writers stack slices in the Page Builder, which is listed on every plan including Free.
Slice components in the site repo
The CLI syncs models and TypeScript into the website that renders them.
Releases on the entry plan
Scheduling, releases and revision history are listed from Free upward.
Consider neither when
Self-hosted documents
Content Lake and the Prismic repository are both vendor-hosted.
No developer for the editor
Studio and slice components both need an owner after launch.
Unusual locale rules on a tiny plan
Sanity’s model is yours to design. Prismic’s locale count is capped by plan.
Criterion-by-criterion comparison
Marketer autonomy
Prismic’s default task is stacking slices. Sanity’s default task is the Studio you designed.
Sanity
Flexible editing; autonomy depends on setup
Editor independence depends on your implementation: developers define page composition, navigation and guardrails through schemas and code.

- Sanity Studio: Supports the open-source React Studio, real-time collaboration, schema configuration and extensive customization.
- Sanity visual editing architecture: Supports the implementation model based on Content Source Maps, stega metadata, overlays, preview mode and live updates.
Prismic
Writers stack the slices developers allow
A writer can add, reorder and fill slices without changing the website code. A new slice, or a change to its fields, is a developer change in the model and component.
View sources (2)
- Prismic slices: Slice models and components are saved in the website code and returned by the Content API.
- Prismic content modeling: Models content as fields, page types, slices and custom types, with slice choice set by developers.
Choosing between them
Independence arrives after inputs and Presentation behavior exist.
Independence arrives when the allowed slices already cover the page.
Time one real page in both. The shorter path for a marketer is the relevant result.
Content modeling
Sanity models documents in code. Prismic models pages, slices and custom types.
Sanity
Schema-as-code structured documents
Reusable models, validation and schema changes are defined in JavaScript or TypeScript using documents, objects, arrays and references.
View sources (1)
- Introduction to Sanity schemas: Supports code-defined document and field schemas, validation and schema migration tooling.
Prismic
Fields, page types, slices and custom types
Page types are built from fields and slices. Slice models and their UI components live in the website project and are returned as an ordered array.
Plan considerations: New projects use the Type Builder and CLI. Slice Machine remains for existing projects and is deprecated.
View sources (3)
- Prismic content modeling: Models content as fields, page types, slices and custom types, with slice choice set by developers.
- Prismic slices: Slice models and components are saved in the website code and returned by the Content API.
- Prismic Type Builder: Slice Machine is deprecated. New projects model in the Type Builder and sync with the CLI.
Choosing between them
Documents and references suit content that is not a page.
Slices and page types suit pages. New projects should use the Type Builder, not Slice Machine.
If the main object is a page, start with Prismic. If it is a reusable document, start with Sanity.
Workflow and governance
Prismic includes releases early. Sanity’s deeper release tools are plan-gated, as are Prismic’s roles.
Sanity
Collaboration is strong; release depth is tiered
Teams can collaborate in real time with role-based access; Growth supports scheduled single-document drafts, while grouped releases and custom roles require Enterprise.
Plan considerations: Release controls, approvals, SSO, roles and history depend on your plan; check that your requirements are included.
View sources (5)
- Sanity Studio: Supports the open-source React Studio, real-time collaboration, schema configuration and extensive customization.
- Sanity scheduled drafts: Supports scheduling single documents and documents Growth-plan availability.
- Sanity Content Releases: Supports grouped document versions, preview, validation, scheduling and publication; documents Enterprise plan availability.
- Sanity roles: Supports dataset and document access roles, GROQ-defined content resources and Enterprise custom roles.
- Sanity pricing: Supports current Free, Growth and Enterprise tiers, seat charging, quotas and add-ons.
Prismic
Releases on every plan; roles start later
Pricing includes scheduling, releases and revision history from the free plan. Writer and publisher roles start on Medium, and custom roles per locale are Enterprise.
View sources (2)
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
- Prismic users and roles: Small and Starter plans make every user an Administrator. Custom locale roles are Enterprise.
Choosing between them
Scheduled drafts are Growth. Grouped releases and custom roles are Enterprise.
Releases are on Free. Separate writer and publisher roles start on Medium.
Match the required role and the required release action to a specific paid tier on each side.
Localization and multisite
Sanity lets you design the locale model. Prismic gives you locales up to a cap.
Sanity
Flexible schema/plugin-driven localization
Teams choose and maintain their own localization model using field- or document-level patterns and recommended plugins.
View sources (1)
- Sanity localization: Supports field- and document-level localization modeled in schemas, with recommended plugins for both approaches.
Prismic
Locales on every plan, with a numeric cap
Editors copy a page to another locale and translate it there. Free includes two locales, Platinum eight, and Enterprise replaces the cap with a custom quota.
View sources (2)
- Prismic locales: Adds locales in repository settings and copies a page, including its structure, to another locale.
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
Choosing between them
Field or document localization can follow the domain, with plugins you maintain.
Copy a page between locales. The count runs from two on Free to eight on Platinum.
Choose Prismic when the cap fits. Choose Sanity when the translation shape does not fit a page copy.
Developer experience
Sanity developers own Studio and GROQ. Prismic developers own slices and a hosted repository.
Sanity
Open React Studio plus schema-as-code
React components and plugins let developers tailor Studio or host it themselves, but the team owns upgrades and maintenance.
View sources (3)
- Sanity Studio: Supports the open-source React Studio, real-time collaboration, schema configuration and extensive customization.
- Sanity Studio hosting and deployment: Supports Sanity-hosted or self-hosted Studio while the browser application connects to hosted Content Lake APIs.
- Introduction to Sanity schemas: Supports code-defined document and field schemas, validation and schema migration tooling.
Prismic
Type Builder plus CLI in the website repo
Developers sync models, generate TypeScript and keep slice components beside the site. Prismic hosts the content, so the remaining app work is the frontend and preview route.
View sources (2)
- Prismic Type Builder: Slice Machine is deprecated. New projects model in the Type Builder and sync with the CLI.
- Prismic slices: Slice models and components are saved in the website code and returned by the Content API.
Choosing between them
Schema code and Studio upgrades stay with the team. Content Lake stays with Sanity.
Type Builder, the CLI and slice components stay with the team. The repository stays with Prismic.
Pick the codebase you want to maintain: a Studio app, or slice components plus a sync CLI.
APIs and extensibility
GROQ can reshape documents. Prismic’s APIs return pages, slices and custom types.
Sanity
GROQ, GraphQL, real-time APIs and webhooks
Developers can join and reshape content with GROQ, use schema-derived GraphQL queries, and integrate live updates or filtered webhooks.
View sources (3)
- GROQ introduction: Supports native querying, joins, projections and transformations against Content Lake.
- Sanity GraphQL: Supports a schema-derived GraphQL query API and documents GROQ as the recommended native query language.
- GROQ-powered webhooks: Supports filtered event triggers and projected webhook payloads.
Prismic
Content API, GraphQL, migration and webhooks
Pricing includes the document API, GraphQL, webhooks and the Migration API on every listed plan. Private repositories use a read token; writes use a separate bearer token.
View sources (3)
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
- Prismic webhooks: Sends HTTP POST events when pages, releases or tags change, with retries after a non-200 response.
- Prismic API authentication: Separates private Content API access tokens from write tokens for types, assets and migration.
Choosing between them
Prefer it when joins and projections are part of the product.
Prefer it when the site reads page documents, GraphQL and webhooks, plus a migration API for writes.
Write the two queries the site cannot lose and see which API expresses them without a second join layer.
Hosting and operations
Both content stores are managed. You host the website either way.
Sanity
Managed Content Lake; flexible Studio hosting
Sanity runs the content backend and APIs; Studio hosting is flexible, while frontend hosting and application operations remain your responsibility.
View sources (2)
- Sanity Studio hosting and deployment: Supports Sanity-hosted or self-hosted Studio while the browser application connects to hosted Content Lake APIs.
- Sanity security and compliance: Supports SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, GCP hosting, encryption, access control and business-continuity claims.
Prismic
Hosted repository and CDN; you host the site
Prismic stores pages and media and serves them through its API and CDN. Your team still builds, hosts and operates the website that renders the slices.
View sources (2)
- Prismic page basics: Prismic hosts the repository. Writers stack developer-defined slices in the Page Builder.
- Prismic security: Hosts customer data on AWS in us-east-1 and describes snapshots, failover and customer export.
Choosing between them
Studio hosting is flexible. Documents stay in Content Lake.
The repository, API and CDN stay at Prismic, on AWS in us-east-1.
Do not choose either for a private content database. Compare residency only with a written answer.
Security and governance
Sanity publishes SOC 2 Type 2 for its platform. Prismic publishes its AWS hosting story.
Sanity
SOC 2 Type 2 baseline; advanced access is tiered
Documented protections include SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR and encryption on GCP; SAML SSO, custom access controls, quotas and support depend on your plan or add-ons.
View sources (3)
- Sanity security and compliance: Supports SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR, GCP hosting, encryption, access control and business-continuity claims.
- Sanity roles: Supports dataset and document access roles, GROQ-defined content resources and Enterprise custom roles.
- Sanity pricing: Supports current Free, Growth and Enterprise tiers, seat charging, quotas and add-ons.
Prismic
AWS hosting; SSO and SLAs are Enterprise
The security page places customer data on AWS in us-east-1 and describes snapshots and failover. It cites AWS certifications. SSO, backups and uptime SLAs are Enterprise terms.
Plan considerations: A public Prismic SOC 2 report was not on the security page. Ask security@prismic.io for assurance documents.
View sources (2)
- Prismic security: Hosts customer data on AWS in us-east-1 and describes snapshots, failover and customer export.
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
Choosing between them
SOC 2 Type 2 and GCP controls are documented. SSO and custom roles are tiered.
The security page describes AWS us-east-1, snapshots and failover, and points enterprise buyers to SSO and SLAs.
Ask both for the report your security team can file. AWS certifications are not a substitute for that report.
Pricing and cost drivers
Sanity meters seats and usage. Prismic meters the repository’s users, calls, bandwidth and locales.
Sanity
Per-seat plan + usage quotas and add-ons
Budget for seats and content, API, bandwidth and asset limits; Growth add-ons and Enterprise terms can materially change total cost.
Plan considerations: Check the quotas, overage charges, add-ons and datasets you need, plus any Enterprise contract terms.
View sources (2)
- Sanity pricing: Supports current Free, Growth and Enterprise tiers, seat charging, quotas and add-ons.
- Sanity technical limits: Supports current document, attribute, request, mutation and query limits.
Prismic
Per repository: users, calls, bandwidth, locales
Free is one user, two locales and hard API and bandwidth caps. Paid plans raise those caps, and bandwidth overages are priced per gigabyte once the plan allows them.
View sources (1)
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
Choosing between them
Seats, datasets, API usage and Enterprise terms can move the bill.
User count and locale count move the tier. Bandwidth overages appear once the plan allows them.
Price the people and the locales first, then the API volume, over two years.
Migration and exit
Dataset export and the Migration API are both scripted. The content shapes differ.
Sanity
Dataset export/import; custom code still migrates
CLI tools export datasets and assets, but queries, references, Portable Text, image handling and custom Studio code still need adapting to the new system.
View sources (2)
- Sanity dataset CLI: Supports dataset export and import, including assets, drafts and document-type filters.
- Sanity backups: Supports Enterprise managed backups and documents manual dataset export for plans without that feature.
Prismic
Migration API in; export or the Content API out
The Migration API creates and updates documents for a scripted import. The security page also points customers to the export module or the repository API for their own copies.
View sources (2)
- Prismic Migration API: The Migration API creates and updates repository documents for scripted imports.
- Prismic security: Hosts customer data on AWS in us-east-1 and describes snapshots, failover and customer export.
Choosing between them
Export can include assets and drafts. Portable Text and GROQ still need a mapping.
The Migration API imports documents. Export or the Content API is the documented way to take a copy.
Convert ten pages, including rich text and one locale, in both directions before you commit.
Marketing website fit
Prismic is the more direct marketing-page tool. Sanity wins when the page is only one channel.
Sanity
Strong when the team funds a tailored editor
A good marketer experience requires well-designed schemas, Studio navigation and preview integration, plus ongoing ownership of that setup.
View sources (3)
- Sanity visual editing: Supports live preview, click-to-edit and visual editing capabilities for content creators.
- Sanity Studio: Supports the open-source React Studio, real-time collaboration, schema configuration and extensive customization.
- Sanity visual editing architecture: Supports the implementation model based on Content Source Maps, stega metadata, overlays, preview mode and live updates.
Prismic
Page Builder aimed at campaign and site pages
The Page Builder and slice list match marketing pages, provided developers keep the allowed slices current. Locale and role limits still follow the repository plan.
View sources (2)
- Prismic page basics: Prismic hosts the repository. Writers stack developer-defined slices in the Page Builder.
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
Choosing between them
Use it when a custom Studio is justified by reuse or a workflow the Page Builder cannot express.
Use it when writers should ship campaign pages from slices and the plan caps fit.
For a typical marketing site, start with Prismic. Move Sanity ahead when structured reuse is the main requirement.
Visual editing and preview
Prismic starts from a Page Builder. Sanity starts from Studio plus a preview you assemble.
Sanity
Live preview and click-to-edit via Presentation
Editors can work in context once the frontend and Studio are integrated; source maps, overlays and live updates power the experience.
View sources (2)
- Sanity visual editing: Supports live preview, click-to-edit and visual editing capabilities for content creators.
- Sanity visual editing architecture: Supports the implementation model based on Content Source Maps, stega metadata, overlays, preview mode and live updates.
Prismic
Page Builder and preview on every plan
Editors build pages from slices and can open a full-website preview. The site must read the preview cookie and fetch draft content with the temporary ref.
View sources (3)
- Prismic page basics: Prismic hosts the repository. Writers stack developer-defined slices in the Page Builder.
- Prismic previews: Full-website preview uses a temporary ref and a preview cookie that the site must read.
- Prismic pricing: Prices each repository by users, API calls, bandwidth and locale caps, from Free through Enterprise.
Choosing between them
Presentation fits when visual editing is part of the Studio you maintain.
The Page Builder and full-website preview are product features, and the site must read the preview cookie.
Compare a marketer’s first hour in each editor, not the API demo.
Recommendations by use case
[Marketing website]
Start with Prismic
Use Prismic when editors should build pages from slices. Choose Sanity when the team will build and keep a custom Studio instead of a page builder.
[Structured content platform]
Favor Sanity
Sanity fits documents and GROQ across channels. Prismic fits pages and slices, and is a weaker default when the content is not a page.
[Multilingual multisite]
Check the cap, then the model
Prismic is enough when the locale count fits the plan and a copied page is the right unit. Sanity fits a custom field or document model.
[Ecommerce]
Favor Sanity for connected products
Sanity fits product and category documents you query. Prismic fits campaign pages, with product data brought in through integrations or the API.
[Enterprise governance]
Validate enterprise requirements
Match Sanity releases, SSO and roles to the plan. Match Prismic custom locale roles, SSO, backups and the uptime SLA to Enterprise.
[Small team]
Match the editor to the team
Prismic can be enough when one to three administrators will use the Page Builder. Sanity fits a team that will maintain Studio. A simpler CMS may still win.
